DRAFT--U13 and U14 Playing Time Guidelines--DRAFT

The following guidelines describe a coach's responsibility to ensure fair playing time for U13 and U14 players.

  • Playing time at U13 and U14 becomes more complex than at younger ages. There are increasing competitive needs and the focus shifts from ensuring 50% playing time for every player to having the team play at its collective best, which may mean that some players play more than others.
  • Individual player development remains an overriding goal for U13 and U14 players.
  • Coaches should strive to get players as much playing time as possible in each game, at a minimum, ensuring that each player plays in each half of each game. *
  • Playing time may vary game-to-game. Coaches should be mindful of finding more time for some players in friendly games and non-results oriented tournaments. During these games, players should expect playing time that approaches a minimum of 50% of the game.
  • It is understood that coaches do not have a stop watch to time player field time. The expectation is for coaches to adopt and enforce the fair playing time as best they can while maintaining sideline structure. There is no need to embarrass a player by having them play an unfamiliar position to provide fair play time. If a player misses playing time, the coach should attempt to make it up during a future game. Common sense should prevail.
  • In the event that a player does not meet the minimum playing time, please communicate the concern to the coach. If a player consistently does not meet the minimum playing time, please contact the Director of Coaching or the President of Colts.

* At all age groups, players may receive less playing time for failing to participate in practices and games or for disciplinary reasons.
