U12 U13 Transition
The transition from U12 to U13 can be a big one, as for many of the players it will be the first time that evaluations potentially count towards placement on a team. This is also a time that many questions arise about Middle School soccer vs. Colts soccer, practices, etc. This FAQ attempts to answer some of those questions.
The Middle School team typically constitutes 4 days per week: 3 for practices and 1 for games. All activities are on weekdays.
There are no cuts in Middle School. If needed, expansion teams will be created and athletes will be divided based on their abilities (there will typically be an "A" team and a "B" team).
The competition is usually lighter for the school team as compared to the Colts league.
Yes.
Yes. We encourage and expect that most Colts players will also play Middle School.
Minimally 1 practice per week (on a weekday) and 1 game on the weekend (usually Sundays). Note that with Middle School play, kids are playing soccer 6-7 days per week.

In addition to practices and league games, teams will play in Cumberland's Just for Fun Labor Day Weekend Tournament, Falmouth's Fall Classic Tournament, as well as post-season playoffs and possibly championship. The season can go as late as early November.
Players are expected to attend all practices and games, including tournaments and post-season play. Full attendance is necessary for the team to realize its full potential. Further, especially in the case of cuts, making the team is both an accomplishment and a privilege. Players are expected to be fully dedicated.
Cuts may be necessary to maintain proper roster sizes. Evaluations are used to determine who is cut vs. who makes the team.
Multiple teams will be considered for larger groups. Evaluations are vital. Upon review of the talent and size of the group, and availability of coaches, a decision will be made as to whether or not multiple teams will be formed. Those teams will be divided by talent (A/B, not balanced) and when possible will be placed in different divisions (e.g. Division 1 vs. Division 2).

The competition level at U13 and U14 for the Colts travel league is always very high. Like in the younger years, we continue to play in Soccer Maine's Fall Classic League. At this level there is less emphasis on equal play time, and more emphasis on competitive play. See "Colts' U13/U14 Playing Time Guidelines" (http://yarmouthcolts.com/about/U1314.php).
Yes, although this is strongly discouraged. The Colts' limited practice and game time is not enough for the player to continue advancing his/her skills. The Colts should be thought of as an extension to the school team, meant for those players looking to play more soccer at a more competitive level.
Yes, this is encouraged.
Registration will open in late April and end in early May.
Evaluations for U13 players are typically in late May or early June.
Evaluations are run by the Colts, but not by your coaches. An objective process is used, focusing on technical skills, physical skills, tactical skills and coachability.
U13 teams are typically announced a couple of weeks after evaluations. U14 teams may not be announced until later in the summer, depending on timing of team trips, etc.
No. Evaluations will be held for each season.
Typically, U13 players will fundraise through the course of the year for a soccer trip the following summer. Recently, teams have traveled to Canada to play in competitive tournaments. The trips are a lot of fun and a good experience for the players. Trip details are decided by coaches and team parents.
